Q. I don’t plan on renewing the lease on my Manhattan apartment. How much notice am I required to give my landlord?
A. According to Dov Treiman, a Manhattan lawyer, a tenant in New York City has no obligation to notify a landlord of the intent to move out when a lease expires. However, he said, merely vacating an apartment is not enough.
“When you move out,” he said, “you have to surrender the keys to the landlord or his agent, or you can be held liable for another month or more of rent until you do.”
